Ways to Beat Summer Boredom
. . . and do something good, too!

This summer while you rejoice over not having to be in school, you will likely find yourselves with a lot of time on your hands. Though it might be fun in the beginning, after a while you might get a little bored. Did you know there are many things you can do that will not only keep you busy but bring happiness to others as well? Read on to find out!
1. Do you have neighbors who are older than you? Ask your parents if you can assist your elderly neighbors with chores around their house or in their yard. You’ll be just as blessed by helping them as they will to have your help!
2. Do you enjoy helping others? Talk to your church pastor about projects you can help with. Maybe your church’s mothers’ group would love to have you read to smaller children while they meet, or maybe you could help with a church “work bee.” And while you’re at it, talk with some of the other kids in your Sabbath School classes about joining together on service projects. Then tell your pastor, who will be very glad to hear from you!
No matter how old you are, God can use your kindness, creativity, and willingness to help others in big ways.
3. Do you like arts and crafts? Try making your own greeting cards. All you need are paper, crayons, stencils, pencils, and glitter that you might already have in your house. Make an original creation for your parents, grandparents, neighbors, pastors, and friends to say thank you, tell a joke, offer a get-well thought, or just say hello!
4. Do you like pets? Offer to bathe a neighbor’s dog, take it for a walk, or teach it a trick or two. Taking care of animals is a great way to show the world that you love Jesus.
5. Can you make a sandwich? If you can butter two slices of bread, you’re well on your way. Make a simple sandwich picnic to share for a fun summertime evening meal. Pick someone in your neighborhood or church to bless with your company and good food. You can also make batches of peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches to donate to your local soup kitchen or homeless shelter. But make sure you talk to your parents and get their OK before you start!
No matter how old you are, God can use your kindness, creativity, and willingness to help others in big ways. As you enjoy your vacation, ask Jesus to show you opportunities to serve the people around you. You may be surprised at how something small you do can make a very big difference in someone’s life.
