Three in One

Did you know that Adventists have 28 fundamental (that means very important or vital) beliefs that help us stay close to Jesus? These Bible truths are what make us special and form our way of thinking and acting. 

We’d like to tell you about one of the beliefs: the Trinity, also called the Godhead.

The Trinity

Trinity means three, but how can three things exist and work as one? Take an egg, for example. If you break it open, what do you see? How many parts make up the egg? There are three: the shell, the yolk, and the white. Three parts, yet they all form one egg. They work together as a unit.

Or how about this: try braiding three different colors of yarn or rope (red, yellow, and blue). What happens? The three colors blend together to form a complete braid. 

Even though the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit each have a different work to do, they are perfectly united in love, purpose, and care for us.

The red piece of yarn is like God the Father, who loves us and forgives our sins; the yellow color is like God the Son, who created the world and died on the cross to save each one of us; and the blue is like God the Holy Spirit, who comforts us when we are discouraged and helps us enjoy a happy life by teaching us right from wrong. Three different strands, but they work together as one whole.

We can see the Godhead working together at the very beginning of Creation. God the Father was there; Jesus was there creating everything through God’s Word; and the Spirit of God was hovering over the water (Genesis 1:1, 2; John 1:1-3). We can also see the triune God in the story of Jesus’ baptism. When Jesus came up out of the water, the Holy Spirit came down like a dove, and God the Father spoke from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). All three members of the Godhead were present together.

Even though the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit each have a different work to do, they are perfectly united in love, purpose, and care for us. They always work together to help, guide, protect, and save God’s children.

What a wonderful thought! The Father loves you, Jesus saves you, and the Holy Spirit helps you every day. You are never alone, because all of heaven is working together for you!
