And To The Republic
A Poem
by
Sarah Gane Burton

AND TO THE REPUBLIC
If you would know these were the final days—
That good was stunted, only evil grew
And time had reached the toenails of the statue,
The tips of all the irons and the clays—
Would you stand amid that purple haze,
The twilight of worldly empires old and new,
Not wash your hands of any residue,
Or deny the role each mortal being plays,
And scan the skies for a holy asteroid
To pulverize statues, emperors, and kings
Birthing a mountain to rival Mount Everest?
Look into the black and darkening void,
The holy coup is plucking cosmic strings—
Only one destiny can be made manifest.
